Hermès Foundation Renews and Expands Manufacto Program to Preserve Craftsmanship

Hermès Foundation is taking steps to preserve and promote the value of craftsmanship among younger generations through its renewal of the Manufacto program. Manufacto, the Hermès Craftsmanship Studio, was launched in 2016 and is now being expanded to reach more students across France.

The program aims to introduce approximately 1,600 students from 65 classes, ranging from grades 4 to 11, to various artisan crafts such as leatherworking, saddlery, plasterwork, and carpentry. By involving them in the creation of objects, students will learn the skills and techniques associated with each craft.

Through a series of 12 two-hour sessions, each classroom will welcome a craftsman and an assistant who will guide the students in their craft. The students will work on creating an object designed by the renowned BrichetZiegler design studio, and the complexity of the project will be adjusted based on the grade levels of the students.

To support these workshops, an educational project will be developed alongside a workbook for the students. This comprehensive approach aims to not only introduce the students to artisan crafts but also spark potential vocations among them. This is particularly important as Hermès has been facing challenges in meeting the high demand for its products due to a shortage of skilled workers.

For the upcoming 2022-2023 school year, the Hermès Foundation plans to expand the Manufacto program to 70 classes in several academic regions across France. Teachers and school principals from both public and privately-contracted schools who are interested in participating can submit their applications until April 25th by filling out the dedicated form.

By renewing and expanding the Manufacto program, the Hermès Foundation is demonstrating its commitment to preserving and passing on the knowledge and skills associated with artisan crafts. This initiative not only benefits the students involved but also contributes to the longevity and sustainability of these crafts for future generations to appreciate and continue.
