Hats Dior!

The Christian Dior Museum in Granville is set to host an immersive exhibition on the iconic hats of the luxury fashion house. Running from May 14th to October 30th, 2022, the exhibition, titled “Hats Dior!”, will unveil a stunning collection of 200 hats, accompanied by haute couture dresses, vintage advertisements, and fashion photographs. This highly anticipated event marks the triumphant return of the Granville museum, with a dedicated showcase celebrating the artistry of headpieces.

Located in the enchanting villa Les Rhumbs on the picturesque Normandy coast, the museum, which is also the family home of the designer, aims to pay homage to the hats that have adorned the most memorable silhouettes of Dior. The exhibition will take visitors on a captivating journey, starting from the origins of Dior hats, featuring pieces dating back to the 1930s. It was during the post-war era that Christian Dior, in collaboration with artist Mitzah Bricard, developed a penchant for creating simple yet elegant hats. These accessories were considered by Dior as the perfect medium for expressing one’s personality, as stated in his Petit Dictionnaire de la Mode.

The second part of the exhibition will delve into the reinterpretations of Dior hats by the accomplished designers who succeeded Christian Dior. Exploring diverse styles such as masculine-feminine chic, exoticism, and theatricality, this section will highlight the enduring commitment of the fashion house to honor its heritage and continue the legacy of impeccable millinery craftsmanship. Additionally, visitors will have the exclusive opportunity to witness the 25-year journey of Stephen Jones, the esteemed director of hat design at Dior, who joined the fashion house alongside John Galliano in 1996.

A magnificent display of approximately 200 hats spanning seven decades, the exhibition will engage in a captivating dialogue with the accompanying dresses, fashion photographs, vintage advertisements, personal archives, sketches, and tools from the Dior Fashion Studio, entirely dedicated to the art of hat-making. Adding a touch of historical reverence, three special hats have been painstakingly created by Stephen Jones based on original drawings by Christian Dior from the 1930s, serving as a testament to the enduring creativity of the fashion house.

“Chapeaux Dior!” will grace the Christian Dior Museum, located at Villa Les Rhumbs, 1 rue d’Estouteville, 50400 Granville, from May 14th to October 30th, 2022. This immersive exhibition promises to transport visitors into the enchanting world of Dior’s iconic headpieces, offering a unique perspective on the brand’s rich history and unwavering commitment to excellence.
