Harrods Transforms Christmas Window Displays with Augmented Reality

Harrods, the prestigious luxury department store in London, has transformed its Christmas window displays with the integration of technology. Collaborating with Visualise AR & VR, they have introduced an augmented reality (AR) spectacle featuring captivating 3D animations. The theme of this year’s display, titled ‘Witness a Spectacle’, revolves around a massive feasting table that spans the entire length of the store’s frontage. On this table, shoppers can gaze at a stunning collection of luxury brand objects from renowned designers such as Miu Miu, Bulgari, and Carolina Herrera.

Traditionally, Christmas window displays would often feature traditional toys and festive melodies, but Harrods has taken it up a notch by implementing AR technology and introducing an unexpected twist. Among the remarkable elements of the display is a bespoke ‘automaton’ character, reminiscent of the self-operating robots that were popular in the 19th century. This character proudly dons a Harrods ‘H’ breastplate, effectively bridging the gap between classic and modern technology.

Initially, the automaton appears as a clockwork toy, moving somewhat clumsily in harmony with the enchanting sounds of Swan Lake. It gives the impression of being perched atop a charming music box. However, halfway through the animation, the character becomes self-aware. It skillfully removes the mechanical restraints from its feet and bursts into a remarkable freestyle dance right in front of the window display. In a surprising twist, the automaton suddenly jumps up and delivers a powerful kick to the window, causing it to shatter while it continues to dance. Finally, the automaton concludes its awe-inspiring performance and collapses back into its original starting position.

Harrods’ introduction of this tech-enabled Christmas window display pushes the boundaries of traditional festive showcases. By incorporating augmented reality and animated characters, they offer their customers an unforgettable experience that blends the warm nostalgia of Christmas with the thrill of cutting-edge technology. It is a unique fusion of the past and the present that exemplifies Harrods’ dedication to innovation and their ability to curate magical moments for shoppers during the holiday season.
