Gucci Appoints Renée Tirado as Global Head of Diversity

Gucci is taking a step further in its commitment to diversity and inclusion by appointing Renée Tirado as Global Head of Diversity. This move aligns with the current strategies of the biggest luxury brands, such as Chanel and Prada, who are prioritizing these values in their executive teams.

In response to her appointment, Tirado expressed her excitement about building human connections based on principles like inclusion, respect, and diversity. She sees these values as essential to Gucci’s ongoing cultural and economic success. Tirado will also be joining the Gucci Changemakers Council, a group dedicated to driving social change in communities of color. This initiative was prompted by a scandal on social media, where Gucci faced backlash for a black sweater that resembled “blackface”. The controversial sweater has been removed from stores.

Bringing a background in law, Tirado has previous experience in similar roles, including serving as Head of Diversity and Inclusion for Major League Baseball. Gucci sees her appointment as consistent with their mission to create a positive corporate culture and a long-term plan for diversity and inclusion. She will be based in New York and report directly to Marco Bizzarri, President and CEO of Gucci.

Bizzarri emphasized the brand’s commitment to fostering a culture of freedom of expression and inclusion since 2015. He believes that diversity fuels creativity and sees Tirado’s appointment as a crucial step in supporting their existing initiatives. Bizzarri is confident that Tirado will help create meaningful change not only within Gucci but also in the fashion industry as a whole. Tirado herself believes that diversity and equity should be a daily way of life.

In addition to her role at Gucci, Tirado will join the advisory board of Chime for Change, a global campaign created by luxury group Kering in 2013 to promote gender equality and advocate for women. She will also lead various programs within the company, such as the cultural learning program for employees, the multicultural design scholarship program, and the global internal exchange program.

Overall, Gucci’s appointment of Renée Tirado as Global Head of Diversity showcases their dedication to creating an inclusive and diverse environment within their brand and the luxury industry. It is a step towards addressing the challenges of representation and ensuring that diverse voices are heard and valued.
