Google Global Fiber Impact Explorer: Promoting Responsible Sourcing in the Fashion Industry

Google, in collaboration with the WWF and fashion brands like Stella McCartney, has unveiled the Google Global Fiber Impact Explorer (GFIE). This innovative platform aims to promote responsible sourcing decisions within the fashion industry and contribute to a greener future.

Luxury fashion brands are increasingly prioritizing sustainable practices, particularly in the design and sourcing of eco-friendly materials. For instance, Burberry has set a goal to trace 100% of its key materials by 2025, while Mulberry recently introduced a collection of bags made from the world’s least carbon-intensive leather.

Recognizing the urgency of the climate crisis, Google made an announcement back in 2019 about launching a consulting platform to encourage a more responsible supply chain. After two years of development, the platform, known as the Global Fiber Impact Explorer (GFIE), has finally been unveiled.

Developed in collaboration with the WWF, the GFIE platform utilizes Google Earth Engine and Google Cloud computing solutions to assess the environmental impact of approximately twenty commonly used fibers in the fashion industry. The technology focuses on key factors such as air pollution, climate change, water usage, and biodiversity to provide brands with comprehensive insights into the ecological risks associated with different materials. Ruth Porat, CFO of Alphabet and Google, explained that the transparency and information offered by the GFIE would enable those involved in sourcing decisions to make more informed choices.

Stella McCartney, one of the fashion brands involved in testing the platform, was able to identify cotton sources in Turkey that were facing escalated risks related to water and climate, according to a statement. The GFIE has also been experimented with by other companies, but now the tool will be handed over to Textile Exchange. This organization will be responsible for integrating new brands into the platform and further developing the technology with the aim of introducing it to the entire industry by 2022.

Overall, the Google Global Fiber Impact Explorer represents a significant step towards greener fashion practices. By providing comprehensive data on the environmental impacts of different fibers, brands can make more responsible sourcing decisions and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry.
