Global Blue and Alipay Collaborate for Golden Week Shopping Extravaganza

As the highly anticipated Golden Week shopping extravaganza from China approaches, all eyes are on the UK with optimistic forecasts predicting a 4% increase in tax-free retail sales during this seven-day event. Global Blue and Alipay have joined forces to capture the attention of Chinese shoppers with a visually captivating ad campaign designed specifically for Golden Week. This collaboration between the leading tax refund provider, Global Blue, and the popular payment platform, Alipay, is set to make a significant impact in major European cities such as London, Paris, Milan, Florence, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, and Munich. This campaign marks a milestone as the largest initiative ever launched by these two industry giants.

Interestingly, recent reports from another VAT refunds specialist, Planet, revealed a decrease in Chinese shopper activity in the UK in August. This decline could be a signal of pent-up demand among Chinese shoppers, which may be unleashed during Golden Week in October.

Scheduled from October 1 to 7, Golden Week is not only expected to boost shopping during those dates but also to enhance Chinese shopping abroad throughout late September and the rest of October. Global Blue and Alipay are gearing up to promote exclusive offers tied to 15 major luxury brands and retailers across 85 stores. Brands such as Vivienne Westwood and Ermenegildo Zegna, as well as top department stores like Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, are participating in this exciting campaign. Alipay users can enjoy an extra 20% on their tax refund amount by simply collecting a refund coupon on their Alipay app and presenting it to store staff prior to making a purchase.

Global Blue and Alipay are actively connecting with potential Chinese travelers both before and during their trips through various digital platforms, search engines, apps, lounges, and store displays. The campaign’s stunning visuals showcase iconic landmarks from the cities involved, creating an enticing allure for shoppers. Tomas Mostany, the Senior Vice President of Global Blue, highlighted the importance of this promotion as Chinese travelers greatly contribute to the company’s success, particularly during the competitive Golden Week period.
