Givenchy Catwalk

French fashion house Givenchy recently celebrated its 70-year milestone with the launch of a new book titled “Givenchy Catwalk.” The special event took place at the brand’s store on the well-known Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. The book serves as a tribute to Givenchy’s extensive heritage, featuring a comprehensive collection of 180 ready-to-wear and haute couture collections spanning over seven decades. This marks the first time that Givenchy has unearthed and explored its archives, with the research for the book beginning in 2016.

The book, which spans from the establishment of Givenchy by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952 to the present-day artistic direction of Matthew M. Williams, showcases the work of designers who have contributed to the brand’s success in chronological order. Alexander McQueen’s collections, which defined the Givenchy DNA from 1996 to 2001 with their powerful and ethereal designs, are prominently featured. The founder’s Spring/Summer 1955 Haute Couture collection, dedicated to Givenchy muse Audrey Hepburn, is also highlighted. Furthermore, the book pays homage to John Galliano’s influential two-year tenure at the brand from 1995 to 1997.

With over 1,200 photographs and detailed commentaries by fashion historian Alexandre Samson and fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen, “Givenchy Catwalk” offers a comprehensive exploration of the brand’s creative history. Samson, known for his successful exhibitions at Palais Galliera, collaborated with Madsen to provide insightful analyses of each collection. The book also includes press critiques and opinions from clients, giving readers a well-rounded understanding of the masterminds who shaped Givenchy over the years.

At the book’s launch, Samson revealed that it took him two years to assemble and curate “Givenchy Catwalk.” He faced the challenge of selecting the most iconic looks that would resonate with a broad audience. Samson’s goal was to create a book that would not only amaze but also instill a love for Givenchy in readers, regardless of whether they were journalists, students, or industry veterans.

Samson believes that the essence of Givenchy lies in its ability to strike a perfect balance between commercial offerings and spectacular creations. This served as his inspiration for undertaking the project of creating “Givenchy Catwalk.” Published by Editions de la Martinière, the book is available for purchase at selected bookstores and online for 59 euros. It is deemed a must-have for fashion enthusiasts and individuals interested in delving into the rich history of this iconic fashion house.
