Ganni Announces Plan to Phase Out Leather and Partners with Vegea for Plant-Based Alternative

Ganni, the popular Danish fashion label, has recently made a bold move to address the environmental impact of its business by announcing plans to phase out the use of leather within the next two years. Founder Nicolaj Reffstrup believes that leather will soon be viewed as outdated, comparing it to smoking on TV. To achieve this ambitious goal, Ganni has partnered with Italian company Vegea on a leather elimination project. As part of their collaboration, Ganni will introduce eight pairs of shoes made with Vegea’s plant-based leather alternative for their Spring/Summer 2022 collection.

The decision to move away from leather stems from Ganni’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, particularly in relation to the high levels of methane emissions associated with livestock farming. By embracing Vegea’s plant-based alternative, which is made from agricultural waste, Ganni aims to minimize its contribution to these emissions and transition towards a more responsible supply chain.

In recent years, there has been growing interest among designers in exploring leather alternatives. However, concerns have been raised about the quality and texture of these materials. Renowned designer Stella McCartney, for instance, has highlighted the stiffness and limited usability of many plant leathers she has encountered. These materials have typically been suitable only for a few product categories and not suitable for clothing.

Past iterations of leather alternatives have also relied heavily on plastics, creating their own set of environmental challenges. Vegea’s plant-based alternative, on the other hand, is composed of 55% vegetable oil and grapes, with the remaining 45% being water-based polyurethane (PU). This composition offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional leather, while diverting agricultural waste from ending up in landfills.

Ganni’s commitment to phasing out leather in favor of plant-based alternatives represents a significant step towards sustainability and responsible fashion. By collaborating with Vegea and actively working to reduce their environmental impact, Ganni sets an example for other fashion brands to follow. As the demand for ethical and sustainable fashion continues to grow, it is crucial for companies to explore innovative solutions that align with these values. Ganni’s decision to embrace plant-based alternatives highlights their dedication to meeting the changing needs of conscious consumers while upholding their reputation as a leading fashion label.
