Galeries Lafayette Expands into India with Aditya Birla Partnership

Galeries Lafayette, the renowned French retail giant, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Indian group Aditya Birla to expand its presence in India. The agreement entails the opening of two new stores in major cities, Bombay and New Delhi, scheduled to launch in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The first store, covering a vast area of 8,000 square meters, will be located in Bombay’s bustling commercial and cultural hub, targeting a young audience fascinated by luxury trends. The second store, spanning 5,500 square meters, will be situated in New Delhi’s prestigious DLF Emporio premium shopping center, set to welcome visitors in 2025.

Nicolas Houzé, the CEO of Galeries Lafayette, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion into the Indian market, recognizing its immense growth potential. Ashish Dixit, the managing director of Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, also lauded the collaboration, emphasizing the increasing maturity of India’s luxury market and the presence of affluent, young consumers with substantial purchasing power.

This partnership forms a pivotal part of Galeries Lafayette’s broader international expansion strategy, with the goal of establishing 20 stores worldwide by 2025, predominantly targeting Asia and the Middle East. Presently, the retail group operates 57 stores in France, including 38 franchises, and has a presence in various cities such as Berlin, Beijing, Jakarta, Dubai, Doha, Shanghai, and Luxembourg. With plans to additionally open three stores in China in 2023, Galeries Lafayette aims to have a total of ten international stores.

The retail giant’s entrance into the Indian market signifies the growing interest and confidence in the country’s luxury retail sector. India’s expanding middle class and the presence of a young, affluent consumer base have rendered it an alluring destination for international retailers. The collaboration with Aditya Birla, a prominent Indian fashion group with an extensive retail network, will undoubtedly enhance Galeries Lafayette’s position in the Indian market and pave the way for future growth opportunities.
