Gabrielle Chanel, Manifesto of Fashion

The Musée de la Mode de Paris is eagerly preparing to reopen its doors this fall with an exciting new exhibition dedicated to the legendary fashion icon, Coco Chanel. What makes this exhibition particularly noteworthy is that it will be the first retrospective in France honoring the iconic designer. Titled “Gabrielle Chanel, Manifesto of Fashion,” the exhibition is a collaboration between museum director Miren Arzalluz and artistic supervisor Olivier Saillard, and will occupy an extensive space of over 1,500 square meters.

The exhibition will be divided into ten captivating chapters, each delving into different aspects of Chanel’s life and her impact on society and fashion. Visitors will be treated to a stunning display of photographic portraits capturing the essence of the designer, as well as a staggering collection of 350 pieces sourced from both the museum’s own archives, partner museums, and private collections. The exhibition will also showcase a range of artifacts and objects that are part of Chanel’s heritage, including a selection of exquisite jewelry, accessories, and perfumes. Fans of the iconic N°5 fragrance will be delighted to explore a dedicated room that pays homage to this legendary scent, which was introduced in 1921.

The first section of the exhibition will take visitors on a chronological journey, tracing the early stages of Chanel’s career and illustrating the evolution of her signature style. The second part will adopt a thematic approach, unraveling the sartorial codes that define the Chanel brand. Visitors will have the opportunity to examine iconic pieces such as the timeless tweed suit, the elegant two-tone pumps, the coveted quilted 2.55 bag, and the brand’s signature colors of black, beige, as well as red, white, and gold. The exhibition will also highlight the profound influence of costume and high jewelry in shaping Chanel’s distinctive silhouette.

The decision to honor Chanel as the centerpiece of the museum’s reopening is no coincidence. The Musée de la Mode de Paris has been closed for renovations since July 2018 and has received generous support from the luxury brand itself to establish new galleries named after the designer. Moreover, during the museum’s closure, efforts have been made to make its valuable collections accessible online, allowing a wider audience to appreciate and engage with the museum’s treasures.

Fashion enthusiasts and history buffs alike can mark their calendars for the highly anticipated “Gabrielle Chanel, Manifesto of Fashion” exhibition, which will run from October 1, 2020, until March 14, 2021, at the prestigious Palais Galliera in Paris 16. This immersive experience promises to offer a comprehensive and captivating exploration of Coco Chanel’s unparalleled legacy and her indelible contributions to the world of fashion.
