Furoshiki Paris Installation and Japonismes 2018

Have you noticed the breathtaking pavilion at the City Hall of Paris? From November 1st to November 6th, visitors have the opportunity to admire a monumental installation highlighting the Japanese art of Furoshiki. Even the statues adorning the building are beautifully adorned with meticulously folded fabrics in white and red.

This installation is part of Japonismes 2018, a cultural event that aims to explore the cultural exchange between France and Japan. The architectural studio Tsuyoshi Tane has created an impressive work inspired by the Furoshiki. Dating back to the 7th century, the Furoshiki was originally used to carry clothing to bathhouses, but it soon found its way into various other uses. This carefully decorated piece of fabric has become a symbol of refinement and is often used for wrapping objects and gifts. It embodies the Japanese values of hospitality and respect, making it an integral part of the country’s cultural heritage. Interestingly, the Furoshiki is considered the world’s first eco-bag, highlighting its eco-friendly nature.

The Furoshiki Paris exhibition explores the origins of this art form, its unique characteristics, and its significance in Japanese culture. Alongside the historical approach, the exhibition features projections and showcases reimagined fabrics on the theme of nature, created by renowned artists such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Agnès B., and Takeshi Kitano. Visitors can also participate in practical workshops on “100 ways to use the furoshiki”, which are held inside the pavilion and can be reserved at the Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris.

LVMH, the main sponsor of the event, presents a giant furoshiki installation in the Jardin d’Acclimatation, designed by the Kenzo fashion house. Additionally, a Morris column on the Champs-Élysées, created by JCDecaux, is adorned with furoshiki designs. The Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris also hosts an exhibition showcasing twenty pieces created by the creative teams of the Shiseido skincare brand.

If you have the chance, make sure to visit the Furoshiki Paris installation at the forecourt of the City Hall. The exhibition offers free admission and is open from November 1st to November 6th, 2018.
