French Stylist Chantal Thomass to Step Away from Lingerie Industry After 45 Years

71-year-old stylist Chantal Thomass, known as the “French queen of frills,” recently announced her decision to step away from the lingerie industry after 45 years. In an interview with AFP, Thomass revealed her desire to explore new creative activities that bring her joy. She expressed her intention to focus on designing fashion accessories or home decor items, allowing her to broaden her artistic horizons.

While Thomass may be leaving the lingerie industry behind, she assured fans that the Chantal Thomass lingerie line will continue to thrive under the guidance of the Chantelle Group. Having entrusted them with the brand’s artistic direction, it is evident that Thomass has faith in the future of her beloved lingerie line. Renowned French lingerie brand, Chantelle, will be responsible for designing the forthcoming collections, ensuring the continuation of Thomass’ legacy.

With her unique vision and groundbreaking designs, Chantal Thomass has played a crucial role in transforming lingerie into a true fashion accessory. Back in the 1970s, she made history as the first designer to introduce women’s lingerie to the runway. Her unconventional approach and daring creations challenged the established norms of the industry.

Aside from her contributions to lingerie, Thomass has delved into various other creative endeavors. She has explored luxury hospitality, design, decor, and even entertainment. Notably, in 2016, she took on the role of artistic director for Paris’ iconic cabaret venue, Crazy Horse, during its 65th anniversary celebration. These ventures highlight Thomass’ versatility and her constant pursuit of creativity.

Thomass has faced her fair share of challenges throughout her career. In the late 90s, she lost the rights to her name and brand after being dismissed by majority shareholders. This unfortunate fate was experienced by other renowned designers like Inès de La Fressange and Hervé L. Leroux. However, Thomass persevered and regained ownership of her name and brand in 1998 through a partnership agreement with Japanese company World. She then formed a new collaboration with Dim, a subsidiary of the American group Sara Lee, to resume her activities. In 2011, Dim ultimately sold the Chantal Thomass brand to the Chantelle Group, ensuring its continued success under their expert guidance.

As Chantal Thomass embarks on this new chapter of her creative journey, her contributions to the lingerie industry will undoubtedly be celebrated and cherished. Her distinctive fringe haircut has become her signature logo, symbolizing her rebellious spirit and originality.
