Frasers Group announces dip in revenue and profit due to Covid-19 lockdowns

Frasers Group, the renowned retail conglomerate encompassing well-known brands like Sports Direct, House of Fraser, Flannels, and Jack Wills, has recently announced a dip in their full-year revenue and pre-tax profit for the fiscal year ending in April. This decline can primarily be attributed to the temporary closures of their stores during the various lockdowns triggered by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The company’s revenue declined by 8.4%, resulting in a total of £3.63 billion. Particularly affected were the sports retail revenue and European retail revenue, which fell by 10.7% and 11.8% respectively. However, Frasers Group did observe growth in their premium lifestyle segment, experiencing a 1.9% increase in revenue. This growth can be attributed to various factors, including the opening of new locations and a robust performance in online sales.

Although pre-tax profit shrunk drastically from £143.5 million to a mere £8.5 million, underlying EBITDA saw a marked increase from £302.1 million to £390.8 million. Frasers Group attributed this growth to its ability to adapt and navigate the challenges presented by the pandemic, showcasing a resilient approach to business.

One particularly positive aspect for Frasers Group has been the exceptional performance of its online channel. Since the reopening of its stores within the United Kingdom, the online channel has surpassed all expectations, indicating a strong recovery trajectory for the company. This aligns with the changing consumer behaviors witnessed across the Retail landscape during these unprecedented times.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has unquestionably had a profound impact on Frasers Group’s financial performance, the organization remains optimistic as it enters the reopening period.
