France is taking a new approach to reduce waste and encourage sustainability by implementing a new initiative starting in October. The government aims to tackle the staggering amount of clothing that is discarded by French citizens each year, with a majority of it ending up in landfills. During a visit to La Caserne, a hub for responsible fashion in Paris, Bérangère Couillard, the secretary of state for ecology, announced the new initiative. These participating businesses will also have the opportunity to be labeled by the eco-organization Refashion, further promoting their commitment to sustainability.
Under the new system, customers will be eligible to receive financial support for repairs. They can claim up to seven euros ($7.7) for repairing a heel and 10-25 euros for clothing repairs. The funds for these incentives will be sourced from a 154 million euro budget allocated for the years 2023-2028. This budget reflects the government’s dedication to promoting a more sustainable fashion industry.
According to Refashion, a staggering 3.3 billion pieces of clothing, shoes, and household linen were introduced into the French market in 2022 alone. This highlights the urgent need for a shift towards a more sustainable and circular economy within the textile industry. The French government aims to support repair services and sewing workshops as a vital part of this transformation.
This initiative is modeled after the successful household appliance repair bonus and is part of a broader reform of the textile sector.
