Fenwick Newcastle has received the green light from the Newcastle City Council to proceed with the renovation of its flagship store’s shopfront. The exciting redesign plans involve relocating the main entrance to the center of the store and incorporating a permanent canopy. This project aligns with the ongoing regeneration of Northumberland Street, making it a significant development for the area.
Hugo Fenwick, the development director of the store, expressed his delight upon receiving approval from the council. He emphasized, “We’re thrilled to have been granted approval from the council to transform the façade of our Newcastle store alongside the substantial improvements being made to Northumberland Street itself.”
Councillor Alex Hay also shared his enthusiasm for the project, acknowledging the role Fenwick plays in the local community. He remarked, “This beloved department store holds a special place in the hearts of North East residents, and it’s a fantastic testament to our city’s confidence that Fenwick is investing in this new façade, which will further enhance the store’s elegance.”
The plans for the new storefront draw inspiration from the original architectural features of the site, dating back to the 1880s. The addition of a permanent canopy aims to enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal, while the restoration of the entrance in the middle of the building presents an opportunity for improved public engagement.
In addition to these benefits, Fenwick’s planning application emphasized that the redesign would enhance the experience of the store’s renowned Christmas window displays. The council planner’s report concurs, stating that the relocated entrance will provide passers-by with views into and out of the shop, encouraging engagement and interest.
The store revamp is part of Fenwick’s ambitious £40 million investment program announced in 2022, commemorating the retailer’s 140th anniversary.
