Fashion Trends Revealed in the Q1 Lyst Index

The Q1 Lyst Index has unveiled some fascinating trends in the fashion industry. Despite Prada maintaining its status as the hottest brand, the globally top-searched item on Lyst was an unexpectedly budget-friendly shoulder bag from Uniqlo, priced at under $20. This represents the first time such an inexpensive product has reached the pinnacle of the Lyst Index. TikTok played a crucial role in the bag’s popularity, as it garnered over 59 million views and sold out multiple times in various colors.

Prada continues to dominate the brand rankings, with a 22% increase in searches compared to the previous quarter. The brand’s sunglasses experienced the largest category surge, with searches rising by 56%. Miu Miu, Prada’s sister brand, also witnessed a significant climb in the rankings, securing the second position. The popularity of its pocket bag, collaboration with New Balance, and successful Paris Fashion Week show featuring prominent celebrities contributed to its rise.

Versace made the most significant leap in the quarter, jumping seven spots to claim the eighth position. The brand strategically timed its AW23 shows in Los Angeles to coincide with Oscars weekend, generating buzz and merging the worlds of entertainment and fashion. As a result, searches for the brand increased by 44%.

Valentino, Loewe, and Dolce & Gabbana were other notable brands that saw a rise in the rankings, each moving up two spots in the top 10. However, Kering-owned brands Balenciaga and Gucci experienced a decline in their positions. Balenciaga dropped seven places to the 18th position, while Gucci fell seven places to its lowest position since the inception of the Lyst Index. This drop may be attributed to Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, stepping down or a shift in consumer preference toward “quiet luxury.”

The latest Lyst Index also shed light on breakout brands that are rapidly gaining momentum. Khaite, Magda Butrym, and Ann Demeulemeester were among these brands. Khaite observed a 29% increase in searches following the opening of its flagship store in New York. Magda Butrym’s floral mini dress became a trending product, driving a 76% increase in searches, while Ann Demeulemeester benefited from the appointment of its new creative chief, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and experienced a 17% rise in searches.

In terms of top products, alongside the popular Uniqlo shoulder bag, other affordable pieces also made the list. Weekday’s Astro Loose Baggy Jeans, inspired by 1990s grunge, ranked eighth and sold out in multiple colorways. Adidas Gazelles, worn by notable figures such as Prince Harry, Harry Styles, Kate Moss, and Helena Christensen, secured the seventh spot as the hottest product of the quarter.

Luxury items were prominent in the rankings as well. Prada’s sunglasses propelled the brand to claim the top spot, while fashion shoppers favored Rick Owens’ Kriester sunglasses. Denim pieces, particularly maxi skirts, made a comeback and were adored by influencers. Diesel’s Denim maxi skirt ranked fifth on the list. Bottega Veneta’s drop earrings and Alaïa’s Le Coeur bag solidified their status as must-have accessories for the season.

These trends highlight the ever-growing influence of social media platforms like TikTok, as well as the increasing interest in affordable and “quiet luxury” fashion. The Lyst Index serves as a valuable resource for understanding consumer preferences and the evolving fashion landscape, showcasing the brands and products that captivate fashion enthusiasts worldwide.
