Iconic German supermodel Claudia Schiffer is gearing up to curate a remarkable exhibition at Düsseldorf’s Kunstpalast museum, focusing on the captivating realm of fashion photography from the 1990s. Entitled “Fashion Photography From the 1990s,” this exhibition will provide a one-of-a-kind look into the fashion industry as viewed through Schiffer’s discerning eyes.
Schiffer’s debut curated exhibition will feature a carefully selected collection of approximately 120 pieces that encapsulate the essence of the fashion scene in the 90s. The display will include works by esteemed photographers such as Juergen Teller, Karl Lagerfeld, Herb Ritts, Corinne Day, Arthur Elgort, and Ellen von Unwerth, all of whom played instrumental roles in shaping Schiffer’s illustrious three-decade career.
With an aim to showcase the varied and vibrant world of fashion media, “Fashion Photography From the 1990s” will present a range of billboards, framed prints, magazine pages, and Polaroids. Additionally, the exhibition will integrate moving images, music, and exclusive memorabilia from Schiffer’s personal archive, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look into the iconic fashion shows and afterparties of the era.
Recounting her deep connection with 90s fashion, Schiffer commented, “The ’80s was when I fell in love with fashion, but the ’90s was when I learnt what fashion really was. It was an intense and amazing time that had not been seen before, when shoots lasted for days and fashion was front-page news for weeks. Myself and the other supermodels lived and breathed it and for the first time we realized together, we had the power to make change.”
Scheduled to take place from March 4 to June 13, 2021, at the Kunstpalast museum in Düsseldorf, where Schiffer’s modeling journey kick-started at the local club Checker’s in 1987. Felix Krämer, the General Director of Kunstpalast, expressed his enthusiasm about having Schiffer curate the exhibition, noting, “I am delighted that we have been able to get Claudia Schiffer to curate an exhibition about the fashion world of the ’90s. With this show, Germany’s most successful model – whose career began in Düsseldorf – will reflect in a very personal way an era that set standards to this day.”
