Fashion Industry in the UK Determined to Eliminate Plastic Packaging

The fashion industry in the UK is determined to eliminate plastic packaging, according to a recent survey by Aquapak Polymers. The report reveals that an impressive 88% of fashion brands and retailers in the UK, US, and Australia plan to completely stop using plastic in their packaging within the next five years. Additionally, 8% of participants aim to eliminate plastic within the next 12 months, while an additional 14% plan to do so within one to two years.

Plastic packaging, including carrier and garment bags, has become a major concern among fashion industry executives due to its environmental impact. Around 48% of the respondents expressed extreme concern about their businesses’ use of polybags, which are frequently used for online purchases. Fashion for Good, a global innovation platform, estimates that the fashion industry uses a staggering 180 billion polybags annually.

Interestingly, the report ranks plastic use as the third most impactful factor on the environmental performance of fashion businesses. Energy efficiency of operations and sourcing merchandise with sustainable materials were considered more important. To reduce plastic packaging, 77% of respondents reported changing their folding techniques, 59% eliminated unnecessary packaging types, and 46% switched to alternative packaging materials.

Mark Lapping, CEO of Aquapak, highlighted the industry’s commitment to eliminating plastic and noted that brands and retailers are already taking steps to reduce their reliance on it. However, he emphasized that the pace of change could be accelerated. Lapping also mentioned the availability of alternative materials that offer the same level of protection for garments and merchandise without the environmental issues associated with plastic. Aquapak is currently collaborating with several fashion companies that are early adopters of sustainable packaging practices.

This report indicates a growing dedication from the fashion industry to address its environmental impact and embrace more sustainable practices. As consumer awareness of the environmental consequences of plastic waste increases, fashion brands and retailers are recognizing the importance of sustainable packaging solutions. With a clear majority committed to eliminating plastic packaging within the next five years, the fashion industry is well on its way to reducing its plastic footprint and embracing more environmentally friendly alternatives.
