Fashion Brands Experience Decrease in Visibility on Google: Impact of Algorithm Updates

According to a recent report by digital PR agency, Tank, the UK fashion industry is facing concerns as fashion brands have seen a significant decrease in visibility on Google following recent algorithm updates. Tank conducted an analysis of the impact these updates had on the visibility of the largest fashion businesses and the websites of the top 50 brands in various sectors across the UK.

The findings revealed that fashion businesses experienced a decrease of -0.31% in keyword rankings after Google’s Helpful Content Update and Spam Link Update were implemented. Although this percentage may seem small, it can have a substantial impact on driving sales for these brands.

To measure the impact, Tank analyzed the number of keywords for each company that appeared in the top 10 search results on Google before and after the updates. While industries such as building, homewares, food and drink, architecture, and cars saw improvements in visibility, the fashion sector experienced a decline.

Google’s updates were intended to prioritize helpful content and penalize websites that attempt to manipulate search rankings through low-quality content. However, the situation for the fashion industry is not hopeless. Martin Harris, Head of Digital at Tank, advises brands that have witnessed a decline in visibility not to panic or make impulsive changes to their strategies.

According to Harris, Google’s updates are a natural evolution of its search algorithm. He emphasizes that the most crucial aspect for fashion brands remains the same: providing in-depth and informative content that surpasses their competitors in terms of quality.

Harris also stresses the importance of showcasing a brand’s workforce expertise on their website and addressing relevant issues. By doing so, brands can improve their chances of ranking higher on Google’s search results and attract more organic traffic. Fashion businesses need to understand that the purpose of Google’s updates is to differentiate between content created exclusively to boost rankings and content that genuinely meets users’ needs.

In conclusion, while fashion brands may have experienced a decline in visibility due to Google’s recent updates, there are ways to adapt and improve their rankings. By focusing on providing valuable and informative content, brands can enhance their online presence and maintain their competitiveness in the digital landscape. It is crucial for fashion businesses to stay informed about any future algorithm updates and continue optimizing their websites accordingly.
