Fashion Brands Embrace Sport and Athleisure Collections

When it comes to the fashion industry, sport and athleisure collections have become a significant growth factor for many brands. It’s not just about showcasing their designs anymore; these brands are now incorporating the values of sports into their DNA. This fusion between luxury culture and the spirit of sport is a natural fit, as both worlds share a defiance of the ordinary and an ability to evoke excitement. They have common codes like beauty, elegance, exclusivity, purity, and demands for excellence.

Fashion brands are responding to the increasing demand from consumers who not only appreciate luxury but also participate in active and adventurous lifestyles. As a result, we are seeing brands like Emporio Armani creating off-field uniforms for sports teams, reflecting their passion for sports. Even brands that have traditionally been associated with high-end fashion, such as Chanel, Dior, and Fendi, are now embracing the trend and expanding into sports accessories to tap into this well-established market.

One notable example is the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and the National Basketball Association (NBA). In January, they announced a three-year partnership and started offering exclusive accessories featuring both the NBA and Louis Vuitton branding. They recently launched their second collection, called The Louis Vuitton x NBA Capsule Collection II, on May 28th. This collection includes limited-edition collector’s items such as Louis Vuitton basketballs and basketball hoops, marking the NBA’s 75th anniversary.

The inspiration for this collection comes from the golden age of basketball in the 1990s, which was a time of inclusivity, pop culture, and sports. The silhouettes in this collection represent three key moments in a basketball player’s life: traveling, playing the game, and attending press conferences. The pouches are shaped like basketballs, and the sports bags are adorned with nets, adding a unique and sporty touch.

In addition to the Louis Vuitton x NBA collaboration, this week’s BLSTK Replay also features other noteworthy news in the luxury and digital realm. For example, Jean-Paul Gaultier’s latest collection incorporates underwater themes, while Farfetch focuses on sustainable fashion. Etsy, on the other hand, has made an exciting acquisition.
