Fairly Made: Revolutionizing Sustainability in the Fashion Industry

Fairly Made, a French start-up founded by Laure Betsch and Camille Le Gal, is making waves in the fashion industry by assisting brands in their transition to sustainability. The company collaborates with renowned fashion brands like SMCP and LVMH, as well as independent labels, to help them improve their purchasing practices and become more environmentally and socially responsible.

The founders of Fairly Made have extensive experience working in the buying departments of major fashion companies such as Chanel, H&M, and Louis Vuitton. This firsthand experience has allowed them to understand the needs of brands and identify the gaps in sustainability practices within the industry.

When Fairly Made was established in 2018, environmental concerns were just starting to gain traction in the fashion industry. The start-up initially created capsule collections with a more sustainable approach to raise awareness and provide practical solutions for brands. A notable early success was their collaboration with Des Petits Hauts, assisting the brand in taking its initial steps towards responsible sourcing in 2019.

Fairly Made offers brands a comprehensive solution for tracing their entire value chain and evaluating the environmental, social, traceability, recyclability, and sustainability aspects of their products. In partnership with DNVB Asphalte and women’s fashion brand Des Petits Hauts, the company developed its own platform to collect and analyze information from brands and their suppliers.

By centralizing and analyzing data, Fairly Made helps brands identify areas with the most significant impact and guides their efforts in improving sustainability practices. The company places emphasis on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that provides brands with direct access to their data, transformation plans, and performance metrics.

As customer awareness and scrutiny around greenwashing practices grow, the demand for sustainability in the fashion industry is increasing. Regulatory bodies are also implementing measures to enforce transparency and environmental labeling. Fairly Made supports brands in meeting these requirements and staying ahead of regulatory changes.

In addition to its platform, Fairly Made offers tools for brands to communicate the origin and life cycle of their products to customers. QR codes on labels or widgets enable brands to enhance their products’ potential and extend their lifecycle in the second-hand market.

With a growing client roster of approximately 50 brands in France and Europe, Fairly Made is experiencing rapid growth. The company plans to expand its team from a dozen employees to around thirty by the end of 2022. To support its expansion and continue developing its methodology, which now encompasses textiles, leather, metalwork, and woodwork, Fairly Made aims to raise three million euros in its next funding round.

Fairly Made is playing a pivotal role in driving sustainability in the fashion industry. Through its expertise, tools, and methodology, the company supports brands in their journey toward a more transparent, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible future. As customer demand and regulatory pressure continue to increase, Fairly Made is well-positioned to assist fashion brands in navigating the challenges and achieving their sustainability goals.
