Extraordinary Collection of Lagerfeld Sketches to be Auctioned

An extraordinary collection of 180 sketches by the late and legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld will soon be up for auction at Sotheby’s on July 6th. These exquisite and unique sketches, which Lagerfeld created using a variety of mediums such as ink, markers, watercolors, and even makeup, provide a captivating glimpse into his deep passion for both fashion and art. Sotheby’s decision to sell these drawings during Haute Couture Week in Paris, following the dispersal of Lagerfeld’s estate, offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors to own a tangible piece of this iconic designer’s creative legacy.

The 180 drawings up for auction span from Lagerfeld’s early career in the late 1960s to his final works in 2018. This expansive range of sketches provides a fascinating insight into the extensive and illustrious career of Lagerfeld, who notably served as the creative director of Chanel and Fendi. Curated from Lagerfeld’s residences at 8 rue des Saints-Pères and 17 quai Voltaire, this auction features a remarkable collection of his fashion sketches. Not only do these drawings chronicle the evolution of fashion over the years, but they also exemplify Lagerfeld’s limitless inventiveness and artistic virtuosity.

Among the standout lots in this highly-anticipated auction is a set of 24 sketches dating back to 1969, representing some of Lagerfeld’s earliest works. These sketches are thoughtfully bound together in a binder and are accompanied by three press clippings from the same year, as well as collages that Lagerfeld created to display his sources of inspiration. Each sketch in this collection exemplifies Lagerfeld’s skillful hand and attention to detail, meticulously crafted in ink. However, several of these sketches also incorporate additional elements made with markers, grease pencils, corrector fluid, and even makeup. Notably, one of the sketches portrays a dress, sketched with black and beige grease pencil and further enhanced with red-tinted makeup. This particular piece has an estimated value of €1,000 to €1,500, displaying both the artistic value and collectability of Lagerfeld’s sketches.

The highly-anticipated ‘KARL, Inspirations, Succession Karl Lagerfeld Part IV’ auction is scheduled to take place in Paris on July 6th, perfectly timed to coincide with Haute Couture Week.
