European E-marketplaces and the Future of Cross-Border Sales

Cross-border sales have become crucial in the ever-growing world of e-commerce, with European e-marketplaces such as Zalando, Asos, Farfetch, and others taking the lead. While European-owned groups only made up 21% of total cross-border sales in 2018, they are steadily making progress in the international market.

CBCommerce recently published a ranking of European e-marketplaces based on their cross-border sales, performance metrics, and various other factors. Topping the list was the German powerhouse Zalando, followed closely by Fruugo, Asos, and Farfetch. The rankings also featured players like Carrefour, Spreadshirt, VidaXL, iamfy, and Vestiaire Collective.

It is worth noting that European e-marketplaces brought in €9 billion in cross-border sales, whereas non-European counterparts raked in €33 billion. Despite this, CBCommerce foresees a substantial growth of over 50% for European-owned e-marketplaces in 2020.

European companies that previously concentrated on local markets are also projected to contribute to this surge in growth. Businesses like On Buy, Flubit, Otto, Real, Worten, Rakuten France, La Redoute, and Cdiscount are all eyeing international expansion. For instance, Cdiscount, which currently derives only 5% of its sales from outside of France, holds significant potential for overseas expansion.

Moreover, CBCommerce highlighted the emergence of niche e-marketplaces, taking inspiration from success stories such as Newegg, Reverb, and Zibbet. These platforms cater to distinct demographics and offer specialized products that fill market gaps in areas like electronics, musical instruments, and goods crafted by independent artists.

In conclusion, the European e-commerce scene continues to evolve, with more players venturing into the global market and challenging the supremacy of non-European giants like Amazon. With a growing focus on cross-border sales and expanding international ambitions, European e-marketplaces are poised to make a significant impact in the years ahead.
