Ermenegildo Zegna’s Evolution: Selling Agnona, Acquiring Thom Browne, and a New Era of Luxury Menswear

Ermenegildo Zegna, the esteemed Italian luxury menswear brand, has recently undergone a significant transformation in its brand portfolio by selling Agnona, its women’s ready-to-wear label known for its exquisite knitwear pieces. This strategic decision follows the acquisition of the renowned American fashion house Thom Browne in 2018, highlighting Ermenegildo Zegna’s dedication to refining and modernizing its brand offerings.

Although Agnona has been sold, Ermenegildo Zegna has retained a 30% minority stake in the label, ensuring that it remains connected to the Zegna family legacy. By transferring 70% of Agnona to Roberto and Stefano Aimone, who now steer the brand as its new proprietors, Ermenegildo Zegna guarantees the brand’s operations moving forward. Laura Zegna, a key figure in the family business as both Stefano’s mother and Paolo Zegna’s sister, maintains a close relationship with Agnona.

Roberto Aimone, previously instrumental in leading Agnona, now assumes the role of executive president, while Stefano, equipped with a background in luxury fashion design, steps into the position of creative director. Alessandra Carra, the longstanding CEO of Agnona, will assist the Aimone family during their transition until Stefano officially takes the helm as CEO.

The departure of Simon Holloway, the creative force behind Agnona since 2015, marks a turning point for the brand. As the Anglo-American designer seeks new opportunities, Ermenegildo Zegna’s efforts to revive Agnona, a brand with a rich history dating back to 1953, continue. Despite past efforts to rejuvenate Agnona, the brand has encountered challenges in resonating with the market.

Simon Holloway’s exit prompts contemplation on Agnona’s past and future trajectory. With recent showcases of men’s collections for Agnona earlier this year, Holloway injected a modern flair into the brand that had phased out its menswear line two decades ago. His departure paves the way for the Aimone family to infuse fresh creative perspectives as they embark on new leadership roles at Agnona.

In essence, Ermenegildo Zegna’s divestment of Agnona and Simon Holloway’s farewell mark a new beginning for both the brand and the Zegna Group as a whole. With a focus on innovation and expansion, the Zegna Group continues to adapt its brand offerings to meet the ever-evolving landscape of the luxury fashion market.
