Éric Pfrunder, Collaborator and Right-Hand Man to Karl Lagerfeld, Passes Away

Éric Pfrunder, a close collaborator and right-hand man to the late Karl Lagerfeld, has sadly passed away at the age of 74. Pfrunder played a pivotal role in Lagerfeld’s photography projects for renowned fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, and his own label. He was also involved in editorial work for major fashion magazines.

Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel Fashion, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the house at the news of Pfrunder’s passing. Pavlovsky emphasized Pfrunder’s essential contribution to the creation of Chanel’s iconic image over the course of 36 years. Pfrunder was instrumental in establishing Chanel as the ultimate luxury fashion brand, working closely with Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard as part of a creative trio.

Pavlovsky also acknowledged Pfrunder’s significant role in Lagerfeld’s photography career. It was Pfrunder who first suggested Lagerfeld start shooting campaigns in 1987, a decision that ultimately shaped the brand’s visual identity. Pfrunder’s presence became a constant at Lagerfeld’s photo sessions and his expertise was invaluable in helping the designer transition from analog to digital photography. He also introduced Lagerfeld to new and experimental printing techniques and photographic papers.

Born in Algeria, Pfrunder became joint artistic director of Chanel following Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019. He took charge of overseeing advertising, marketing, films, events, and digital initiatives for the brand. Additionally, Pfrunder was entrusted with curating Lagerfeld’s vast archive of campaigns, portraits, magazine shoots, and architectural studies.

Pavlovsky praised Pfrunder for his immense contribution to Chanel, describing him as a man of conviction and loyalty. He commended Pfrunder’s tireless dedication to upholding the brand’s excellence. Pfrunder’s death is a significant loss for the fashion industry, and tributes from friends and colleagues have already begun pouring in on social media.
