Encouraging Footfall Numbers in London’s West End

The New West End Company (NWEC) has reported encouraging footfall numbers in the West End of London following the easing of lockdown restrictions in England on “Freedom Day” last week. According to NWEC, footfall increased by 4% last week compared to the previous week, with Saturday and Sunday experiencing a 14% increase compared to the previous weekend.

The rise in footfall can be attributed to the combination of a mini heatwave in the capital and the reopening of London’s nightlife. The NWEC also conducted a survey that revealed London is a top destination for Britons opting for staycations this year. Out of the 1,200 adults surveyed, many expressed their preference for city breaks, with London being the most popular choice. Despite the absence of international tourists, NWEC predicts a spending boom, as three-quarters of respondents claimed they would spend the same amount as they usually do on a foreign holiday.

NWEC’s Chief Executive, Jace Tyrrell, expressed his enthusiasm for the increase in footfall and stated that the removal of restrictions has proven to be a big hit for the West End. Visitors are not only enjoying the various retailers and restaurants in the sunshine but also taking advantage of the thriving nightlife that has once again opened its doors. Tyrrell remains optimistic and expects footfall numbers to continue rising. He commended the resilience shown by businesses in the district during these challenging times, noting that their perseverance is starting to pay off.

However, Tyrrell acknowledges that footfall is still significantly below pre-pandemic levels and anticipates that it will remain so for some time. He believes that further government support, such as extended Sunday trading hours and fundamental business rates reform, could provide retailers, restaurants, and bars with the opportunity to thrive once again.

As the West End of London continues to recover from the pandemic, it is evident that visitors are eager to reengage with the vibrant atmosphere and offerings of this iconic district. The increase in footfall is a positive sign for the local economy and businesses that have endured the challenges of the past year. With ongoing efforts to attract both domestic and international tourists, the West End is positioning itself as a must-visit destination, providing a much-needed boost for the recovery of the UK’s retail and hospitality sectors.
