Elsa Zylberstein to Produce Biopic on Christian Dior

The news of Elsa Zylberstein producing a biopic on renowned couturier Christian Dior has been announced in Variety magazine. The film will focus on a period of ten years in the fashion designer’s life, starting from the end of World War II. It aims to showcase the evolution of his fashion house and delve into his private life.

This project is a new narrative challenge for Elsa Zylberstein, following the success of her previous film “Simone, le voyage du siècle,” which received the prestigious César award and garnered 2.5 million viewers in theaters. Her personal connection to the brand, as her mother worked for Dior perfumes in the 1970s, adds depth to her involvement in the biopic.

The biopic will trace Christian Dior’s history from 1947, a pivotal year when he presented his very first fashion show featuring the iconic Corolle and En 8 lines. This collection gave birth to the term “New Look” and marked the foundation of Dior’s perfume department represented by the famous fragrance, Miss Dior. The film aims to chronicle the beginnings and progression of the fashion house, with a focus on the role of Raymonde Zehnacker, Dior’s studio director, portrayed by Elsa Zylberstein herself. The producer emphasizes the importance of showcasing the influential women behind successful men, highlighting the integral role Zehnacker played in Dior’s career.

The biopic will not only explore the artistic process and the development of the company but will also delve into the world of perfume and shoe design. It will cover the period until 1957 when Christian Dior tragically passed away. At that point, a young designer named Yves Saint Laurent took over the reins of creation, fulfilling Dior’s wish.

In addition to his professional achievements, the biopic will shed light on Christian Dior’s personal life, specifically his love story with Jacques Benita, a man 25 years his junior. Dior was known for being private about his personal life, making it a challenge to find information about him. However, Elsa Zylberstein finds his reserved nature fascinating and believes it adds to the intrigue of his character.

While the casting and release date of the biopic have yet to be announced, fans of Christian Dior can look forward to another project centered around the iconic designer. A series titled “The New Look” will soon be aired on Apple TV+, exploring the rise of Dior and other influential designers such as Coco Chanel and Pierre Balmain.

In the meantime, France.tv will be airing a documentary series called “Luxe, la fabrique d’un rêve” on September 21st. This series will delve into the defining moments of high-end empires and their key figures, including Dior, starting from the 1980s.
