Edinburgh Woollen Mill Withdraws Products from House of Fraser, Impacting Linea Brand

Edinburgh Woollen Mill and its affiliated brands have recently announced their decision to withdraw their products from House of Fraser stores. This move comes after reports earlier in the week revealed that the company would be closing its concessions within HoF. As a result, popular brands such as Jaeger and middle-market labels previously under the Calvetron brands umbrella, like Jacques Vert, will no longer be available in the stores.

Of particular significance is the impact this decision will have on House of Fraser’s own Linea brand. Previously, EWM had an agreement with HoF to produce men’s suits under the Linea label. However, following the withdrawal of EWM’s inventory, this arrangement will come to an end.

An EWM spokesperson cited prolonged negotiations with House of Fraser, now owned by Sports Direct, as the reason for this move. Despite efforts to come to a mutually beneficial agreement, the two parties were unable to reach a resolution that would safeguard the business. EWM, owned by billionaire Philip Day, was a contender in the bidding process for HoF, which was eventually won by Sports Direct.

In the midst of these changes, House of Fraser continues to grapple with challenges like the closure of its e-commerce website and ongoing logistical issues impacting its warehouse operations. Fashion Network reports dwindling stock levels in HoF stores, further complicating the company’s situation.

While House of Fraser struggles, other department stores like John Lewis, Debenhams, and Fenwick are navigating a mix of positive and negative developments. John Lewis recently underwent a rebranding and implemented job cuts, Debenhams launched a new logo and ad campaign alongside a turnaround plan, and Fenwick has had to make staff reductions following a yearly loss.

Moving forward, the big question is how House of Fraser will recover from these obstacles. If these issues are simply temporary challenges associated with administration and managing numerous external suppliers, the company may have a shot at a comeback. However, time is of the essence as the busy Christmas shopping season approaches in October.
