In response to this trend, eBay has decided to extend its authenticity guarantee service to leather goods valued at over $500. This service is currently offered for 16 luxury brands, including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Hermès, and Dior.
To identify certified bags on the site, eBay has introduced a dedicated blue badge. Any bag with this badge is sent to a team of professionals who authenticate the item. The certified bags are then tagged with a double security tag and come with a unique authenticity warranty card that contains detailed information about the product. This process is similar to the protocols already in place for luxury watches and sneakers.
The authenticity guarantee service has proven to be a sales driver for eBay. Since its launch, the sneaker segment has experienced triple-digit growth for several quarters, while the activity in the watch segment doubled in the last quarter. By expanding the service to luxury handbags, eBay aims to strengthen trust between sellers and buyers and capture a larger share of the high-end second-hand market. In 2020, purchases of luxury handbags on the platform increased by 31%.
