Disney and Givenchy Collaboration: The Oswald Collection

In 2023, Disney, the renowned entertainment company, is gearing up to celebrate its centenary, and with this milestone comes a plethora of exciting initiatives. One of these exciting ventures includes a collaboration with Givenchy, the luxury fashion brand, for a clothing collection featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, called Disney x Oswald.

While Givenchy’s beauty division has been dazzling its Roblox space in anticipation of the holiday season, highlighting its forward-thinking vision, the brand has joined forces with a more traditional ally. Givenchy has recently unveiled a captivating capsule collection in collaboration with Disney. This collection comprises an array of apparel items such as jackets, sweatshirts, tracksuits, sneakers, bags, and phone cases.

To commemorate the Chinese Lunar New Year and its 100th anniversary in the upcoming year, Disney has decided to focus on Oswald the Rabbit rather than its popular characters like Elsa from Frozen, Mulan, or Tarzan. Oswald the Rabbit was originally envisioned by Walt Disney in 1927, pre-dating the iconic Mickey Mouse. This deliberate choice is in alignment with the fact that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac.

Inspired by an adventurous universe, the creative director of Givenchy, Matthew M. Williams, has worked his magic to craft a truly unique collection. Described as a “one-of-a-kind world tour,” the collection draws inspiration from cities such as Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, and Paris. The collection became available in China and Singapore on December 16, with pop-up stores opening in Tokyo and Miami on December 19. As of December 30, the entire collection will be accessible in stores worldwide and online. Additionally, a captivating short film was presented to accompany the launch of this collaborative collection.

Matthew M. Williams, the creative mind behind Givenchy, has expressed his deep connection with Disney. “Disney has always held a special place in my heart, as it has for so many people across generations, countries, and cultures. As a Californian, and now a father in Paris, Disney has been a source of significant moments throughout my life,” Williams stated during a previous collaboration with the entertainment giant.

Givenchy has a history of successful partnerships with Disney, having previously released capsule collections such as “101 Dalmatians” and “The Wonder Gallery” lines. This long-term partnership between Givenchy and Disney, similar to collaborations like Balenciaga and The Simpsons or Maserati and Barbie, is part of a strategic move to celebrate and pay homage to iconic entertainment masterpieces and pop culture. These joint ventures are intended to appeal to a wide audience, catering to both nostalgic individuals who hold classic movies and childhood symbols dear, and younger generations who are drawn to vintage fashion and playful clothing.
