Dior is maintaining its commitment to feminist fashion by introducing an exciting and energetic twist to their latest collection for spring. Presented during the bustling first day of Paris Fashion Week, in front of a crowd of 1,200 individuals, Maria Grazia Chiuri showcased a collection that drew inspiration from her upbringing in Rome, specifically referencing the iconic Piper Club where artists and designers would convene. Additionally, Chiuri paid homage to Dior designer Marc Bohan and his Slim Look collection from 1961.
The collection emanated a sense of optimism, featuring strict silhouettes and luxurious embellishments. A notable aspect was the integration of sports-inspired elements, evident in almost half of the collection. Bold and vibrant colors, such as electric blue, shocking pink, and mint green, dominated these sporty ensembles. The overall aesthetic merged 60s silhouettes with the vibrant color palette of the 80s.
Chiuri ventured into experimental territory, incorporating various elements throughout the collection. Some of these elements included patent leather knee-high boots adorned with striking logos, oversized white painter’s pants, and safari jackets embellished with tropical plants and exotic animals. The iconic toile de jouy pattern was also reimagined, featuring roaring lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, and zebras. Alongside these striking designs, black made an appearance in precise suits and little black dresses, adding a touch of sophistication.
In addition to the captivating clothing, Chiuri collaborated with Calabrian artist Ana Paparatti to create a captivating centerpiece in the form of a giant circular puzzle. This masterpiece reflected Paparatti’s themes of imagination and the absurdity of human existence. The show itself was organized in an intimate setting, free from strict social distancing measures or mask requirements, which enhanced the ambiance. Chiuri emphasized the notion that every fashion show is a performance and drew inspiration from Paparatti’s work. The bar jacket played a crucial role in the collection’s tailoring, showcasing a graphic aesthetic.
Yet, what truly sets this collection apart is its focal point on sports and athleticism, particularly concerning the empowerment of women. Chiuri expressed the significance of sports in the liberation of women and shed light on the ongoing challenges they face in participating in sports worldwide. Through this collection, Dior highlights the ongoing battle for gender equality in the sports industry.
