In honor of Greece’s 200th anniversary of independence, Dior has decided to hold its next cruise show in Athens. This special event not only celebrates a milestone for Greece but also pays homage to Dior’s own history with the Greek capital. Back in 1951, Monsieur Dior himself chose the Acropolis as the backdrop for a couture collection, capturing the attention of the fashion world and leaving an iconic moment in history. To commemorate this, Dior released a photograph of eight models on the historic site.
While the exact location for Maria Grazia Chiuri’s show has not been revealed, Dior has highlighted its intention to shine a spotlight on local artists and artisans. This emphasis on showcasing the talent of Greece adds a unique touch to the event and supports the brand’s commitment to highlighting craftsmanship from different regions.
For the past three years, Chiuri has chosen Mediterranean destinations for Dior’s cruise shows, and Athens serves as the perfect continuation of this trend. Previous shows in Marrakech and Lecce provided stunning backdrops for the collections and collaborations with local artists and artisans, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success.
By selecting Athens, Dior is also acknowledging Greece’s struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821. Lord Byron, a renowned poet and figure of the time, played a significant role in rallying international support for the cause. Although his life was tragically cut short during the war, his presence and financial contributions helped fuel the independence movement.
As Dior prepares to present its Cruise 2022 collection in Athens, the brand remains committed to its tradition of combining fashion, art, and history. This upcoming show promises to be a magical celebration of Greek culture and craftsmanship, highlighting Dior’s unwavering dedication to excellence.
