Dior Unveils Haute-Couture Installation Celebrating Black Female Figures

After unveiling its haute-couture spring-summer 2023 collection at the Rodin Museum, the house of Dior continues to captivate and delight with its latest offering. Now, the general public has the unique opportunity to explore the unprecedented scenography designed for the show. A tribute to great black female figures, the installation stands as a new pantheon of women and can be found at the heart of the sculpture garden.

Created by renowned African-American artist Mickalene Thomas, the structure proudly showcases the faces of remarkable black women who have made significant contributions to various fields. Among the notable figures depicted are pianist and singer Nina Simone, actress Dorothy Dandridge, model Donyale Luna, and the unforgettable Josephine Baker. These giant portraits were meticulously crafted using embroidered textiles provided by the esteemed Chanakya workshops and the Chanakya School of Craft.

The concept for this striking scenography was born from a conversation about the significance of black female icons who have shattered racial barriers and defied societal norms, becoming role models for many. By selecting thirteen exceptional black and biracial women from different continents, the aim was to create a diverse and eclectic representation of extraordinary personalities. These women persevered against adversity, embodying confidence, elegance, beauty, and talent.

Dior’s decision to invite the public to experience the installation for an additional week highlights its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This move echoes a similar initiative taken by the brand in July 2021, when it opened the doors to an installation by artist Eva Jospin at the same venue. This playful approach not only expands the brand’s reach but also strengthens its brand image.

Don’t miss the chance to witness the awe-inspiring Dior Installation at the Rodin Museum. It will be open from January 24th to 29th, 2023, at 77 rue de Varenne, Paris 7.
