Dior Men’s Latest Collection Inspired by Rudolf Nureyev

The latest menswear collection by Dior, created by designer Kim Jones, draws inspiration from the legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev. Nureyev, who is known as one of history’s most renowned dancers, serves as a muse for the collection. The collection also takes inspiration from Colin Jones, Kim Jones’ uncle, who was a former Royal Ballet dancer turned photojournalist. Colin documented a day in the life of Nureyev, capturing him in various settings such as English parks and pubs. These photographs were later compiled into a book, which served as a charming present for the show.

The Dior collection beautifully captures the essence of Nureyev’s aesthetic. It showcases his love for stylish 60s London tailoring as well as his fondness for Asian potentate chic. The show starts with an array of big shorts and deep gorge tops, paired with iridescent raincoats. These looks are then alternated with silk and fine wool suits, featuring wrap jackets with concealed buttons. Crispy coats in subtle gray and anthracite chalk-stripe are also showcased, wrapped and fastened with misplaced buttons. Many of the models don Nureyev’s signature painter’s knotted cloth caps, and his matelassé silk dance slippers anchor several looks.

Nureyev, who defected to the West in 1961, became a fashion icon over time. This is not the first time that a designer from LVMH has referenced Nureyev in their work. In the past, designer John Galliano paid homage to the dancer with a sexually charged collection. However, Galliano’s career took a turn for the worse following an angry rant, and his collection was quickly forgotten. In contrast, Kim Jones takes a gentler and more opulent approach to portraying Nureyev. The show concludes with a euphoric display of beautifully embroidered coats and tops adorned with snow crystals. The collection includes stunning pieces such as a crystal mesh tunic, an off-the-shoulder alligator blouson, a toile de jouy tank, and a matching backpack, all intricately embroidered with silvery thread and anthracite crystals.

While Nureyev’s life was filled with challenges, including being born on a train on the Trans-Siberian railway and facing opposition from his father for pursuing dance, Kim Jones had a more supportive upbringing. His uncle Michael, whose first wife frequently partnered with Nureyev in ballet productions, played a significant role in his life. Unfortunately, Colin Jones passed away in 2021. However, he remains a great inspiration for Kim Jones, and the Dior Winter 2024-2025 men’s show is dedicated in memory of Colin and his brother Michael, Kim Jones’ late father.

Through the combination of Nureyev’s legacy and Kim Jones’ creative vision, Dior Men’s latest collection pays homage to the iconic dancer while celebrating his unique style and enduring influence.
