Dior Men Spring 2022: Honoring the Legacy of Marc Bohan

In a tribute to the former creative director of Dior, Marc Bohan, Kim Jones, the current creative director of Dior’s menswear, showcased a Spring 2022 collection that celebrates Bohan’s influence and legacy. Bohan, who held the position at the fashion house for nearly thirty years, has been an ongoing inspiration for both Jones and Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director for womenswear, due to his youthful aesthetic, graphic designs, and commercial success.

Jones took inspiration from Bohan’s designs from the 1960s, particularly his iconic “CD” insignia, which was reimagined as a love heart motif by Jones. This motif was incorporated throughout the collection, adding a playful and romantic touch to the sporty American summer looks.

“We took a deep dive into our archives and reinvigorated the Christian Dior Atelier by revisiting our greatest hits. We examined different techniques, especially the floral patterns, and focused on Marc Bohan’s designs from the ’60s,” Jones explained.

While Bohan may have been overlooked by some critics in comparison to other Dior designers, his influence is undeniable in both Jones and Chiuri’s work. Jones, in particular, has shown exceptional tailoring skills since joining Dior, delivering impeccably cut trousers and sharply tailored jackets with elongated lapels and cinched waists.

Staying true to Dior’s heritage, Jones incorporated animal prints into the collection, particularly big-cat prints. Green-leopard cashmere cardigans and beige roll-collar sweaters paid homage to Monsieur Dior’s use of leopard prints in his renowned debut collection in 1947, known as The New Look.

The collection also featured an array of unique and cool pieces, including crew-neck Aran sweaters with V-shaped cut necklines and Eisenhower jackets with top-flap and slanted lower pockets. These jackets were crafted from smooth reversible shearling, fine wool, and nylon, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the Dior Atelier.

An American influence was prevalent throughout the collection, evident in logo baseball shirts and a black varsity jacket that proudly displayed “Christian Dior Atelier, Paris Avenue Montaigne 47,” referring to the year of the fashion house’s establishment.

Alongside the standout clothing pieces, Jones introduced a range of eye-catching accessories. The collection included new Dior Saddle bags worn with cross-shoulder straps, a sophisticated weekender called the Lingot, and stylish B30 sneakers.

Overall, by combining Marc Bohan’s archival designs with his own contemporary twist, Kim Jones has created a collection that honors Dior’s heritage while propelling the fashion house into the future. Both Bohan and Monsieur Dior would undoubtedly appreciate the innovative designs and exquisite craftsmanship showcased in Dior Men Spring 2022.
