According to a source from Greece’s culture ministry, French fashion house Dior has been granted approval to conduct a photo shoot at several significant archaeological sites in Greece, including the Acropolis. This photo shoot will be used for a runway show set to take place in Athens next month, which aims to pay homage to a renowned photoshoot that took place at the Acropolis 70 years ago for a Christian Dior couture collection. The request to shoot at the Panathenaic stadium, the site of the 1896 Olympics, is also under discussion.
It is important to note that although the photo shoots will take place at these iconic archaeological sites, the actual runway show will not be held at the Acropolis. This decision comes in the midst of ongoing criticism directed at the Greek government for their handling of the country’s archaeological heritage. In March, the restoration work carried out at the Acropolis drew a lot of backlash, particularly due to the construction of a new concrete footpath. However, the culture ministry clarified that these changes were made with the aim of improving accessibility for wheelchair users.
Controversy also surrounds the planned relocation of antiquities in Thessaloniki for metro construction. A group of intellectuals and experts has penned an open letter urging the Greek state to leave the antiquities in their original locations. In light of these concerns, AFP has reached out to UNESCO for their input and comment on these matters.
