Dior and Balenciaga: The Kings of Couture and Their Legacies

A new exhibition at the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) in New York is showcasing the works of Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, two iconic fashion designers. The exhibition, titled ‘Dior and Balenciaga: The Kings of Couture and Their Legacies,’ aims to explore the similarities and differences between the two designers and their lasting impact on the fashion industry.

Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, both born in the early 20th century and settled in Paris after World War II, were contemporaries in the fashion world. Despite their similar backgrounds, they likely had limited contact with each other. However, they were both influential figures who catered to the affluent clientele in France and the United States.

The curator of the exhibition, Patricia Mears, explains that Dior and Balenciaga understood the desires of their post-war clientele who sought beauty and luxury as an escape from the traumas of war. The exhibition features 65 garments and sets from their collections, providing a comprehensive look at their designs and creative talents.

The exhibition aims to juxtapose the works of Dior and Balenciaga, highlighting the differences and similarities between their styles. It can be challenging to distinguish which designer created a particular dress or suit at first glance. To address this, the items are displayed side by side in pairs, emphasizing their unique characteristics. For instance, the exhibition starts with two beige evening gowns that share a silky texture and a fitted bodice leading to a voluminous skirt. Dior achieved this effect using a corset and fabric layers, while Balenciaga employed gathers to create the desired shape. Additionally, Dior’s gown weighs five kg, while Balenciaga’s weighs only one kg.

Dior’s work focused on sensuality and intricate detailing, providing a modern twist to the corseted silhouettes of the Belle Epoque era. In contrast, Balenciaga, often hailed as the greatest designer of his time, showcased more fluidity in his designs.

To further showcase the impact of these two fashion icons, the exhibition includes creations by other designers who drew inspiration from Dior and Balenciaga. It also features the works of the creative directors who succeeded them at their respective labels, such as Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, and Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga.

‘Dior and Balenciaga: The Kings of Couture and Their Legacies’ opened at MFIT on June 1 and will continue until November 6. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity for fashion enthusiasts and industry professionals to explore the contributions of these influential designers and the enduring legacies they have left behind.
