Department Stores: US and UK Dominate Global Rankings

A recent analysis of online search and social media activity conducted by property specialist Stokemont.com has revealed that department stores in the US and UK are the most popular in the world. The study examined a list of 47 renowned department stores and assigned an overall popularity score based on Instagram hashtags, TikTok views, and average global search trend data.

At the top of the rankings is Macy’s in New York, with a combined score of 9.65 out of 10. It narrowly beat Nordstrom, based in Seattle, which secured second place with a score of 9.58. London’s Selfridges and Harrods claimed the third and fourth spots, with scores of 8.96 and 8.89 respectively. Bloomingdale’s in New York and Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC closely followed.

The analysis also included department stores from other global cities. Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris claimed the seventh spot, while David Jones in Melbourne and El Corte Inglés in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon secured the eighth and ninth spots respectively. Istanbul’s Beymen rounded out the top 10.

Macy’s stood out in the analysis with 118.3 million TikTok views, the highest in its category, and an average of 14.2 million monthly global searches, also ranking first. However, it placed third in the Instagram hashtag category, with 1.231 million hashtags.

Overall, the analysis revealed that the US and the UK each had six department stores in the top 10, while Germany and Italy had five each. This demonstrates the dominance of American and British retailers in the global department store landscape.

The findings of this study emphasize the significant impact of online search and social media activity on a department store’s popularity. In the digital age, these platforms provide valuable insights into consumer preferences and trends. Department stores that effectively leverage these online channels can gain a competitive edge and attract a larger customer base.

Furthermore, the study highlights the global appeal of destinations like New York and London as shopping meccas. These cities not only host some of the world’s most iconic department stores but also serve as key destinations for international shoppers seeking a premier retail experience.

As the retail landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how department stores adapt and capitalize on the power of online platforms to maintain their popularity and relevance in an increasingly digital world. While the US and UK currently dominate the rankings, new players may rise to the forefront as consumer behaviors and preferences shift, reshaping the global department store landscape.
