L’Oréal, Johnson & Johnson, and Burberry are taking a stand against plastic pollution by joining forces with over 290 other organizations. The commitment, known as “The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment,” was proposed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme.
Notable cosmetic giants like L’Oréal, Johnson & Johnson, and Unilever have pledged their support to this agreement, as well as prominent fashion industry players such as H&M, Burberry, and Stella McCartney. The signatories of this commitment represent around 20% of the global packaging production each year and include organizations like WWF, Nestlé, and Coca-Cola Femsa.
While efforts to clean up beaches and oceans are important, they cannot solely solve the problem of plastic pollution. This commitment aims to tackle the issue at its source by creating a circular plastic economy. Ellen MacArthur, who announced this agreement during the ‘Our Ocean’ conference in Bali, emphasizes the need for collective action from businesses, governments, and the world to achieve this vision.
In order to track progress and ensure accountability, the brands involved in this commitment will provide annual reports on their advancements and set increasingly ambitious goals.
Alison Lewis, Head of Marketing at Johnson & Johnson Consumer, recognizes the challenge of packaging reform but also sees it as an opportunity to make a positive impact.
