Contrasting Styles: Rick Owens and Isabel Marant Shine at Paris Fashion Week

Paris Fashion Week is currently underway, and two designers who stood out on Thursday were Rick Owens and Isabel Marant. Each designer showcased their unique vision of women’s fashion, offering contrasting styles that captivated the audience.

Rick Owens’ collection was a true spectacle, leaving the audience in awe. Models strutted down the runway in somber, oversized dresses and tight sheath skirts, struggling to walk gracefully in their constraining garments. Their faces were concealed by black veils, reminiscent of a fencer’s mesh mask or a beekeeper’s hat. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of anguish and despair, reflecting Owens’ concerns about the world’s problems. However, amidst the pessimism, Owens injected a glimmer of hope with vibrant red ensembles. As Diana Ross’ voice echoed through the show, multi-colored petals showered down on the models, creating an ethereal ambiance.

The silhouettes in Owens’ collection were imposing and almost sculptural, adding a sense of drama to the garments. Long tunics draped over the models’ bodies, evoking a desert Bedouin-like aesthetic. Elbow-length leather gloves and high-waisted trousers in leather or denim were paired with cropped biker jackets featuring exaggeratedly wide shoulders. Some models even donned leather gilets with pointed shoulders, resembling American football players. Jackets with dramatic lapels extended skyward, accentuating the waist while creating volume in the upper body. Tops made of tulle, ribbons, and silk organza dresses added a touch of femininity. Lightweight dresses and hooded capes made of the finest silk floated as the models confidently walked the runway.

In stark contrast to Owens’ collection, Isabel Marant closed the day with a vibrant show held at the Palais-Royal. The venue was moved outdoors, creating a summery atmosphere, perfectly complementing the collection. Models confidently walked in sandals and wooden wedge clogs, showcasing their skimpy yet stylish outfits. Bare backs, deep side-slits, and combinations of bra tops and pleated trousers exuded a playful and cheeky side. Marant’s collection featured lightweight and fluid materials, such as summer dresses adorned with Art Deco prints, mini dresses in old lace, and topcoats and trousers in parachute canvas. Marant aimed for her collection to be poetic, feminine, and lightweight while still emanating power and simplicity. She also incorporated mechanic-style jumpsuits in denim, leather items, and new-look t-shirts, expanding her fashion offerings.

These two collections presented at Paris Fashion Week highlight the multifaceted nature of femininity. Rick Owens’ show portrayed anguished creatures dressed in somber ensembles, while Isabel Marant exuded an effortless and sexy Parisian vibe. Both shows showcased the innovation and creativity that the fashion world has to offer.
