Consumer Expectations for Sustainability in Retailers

Consumer expectations for sustainability in retailers are on the rise, according to a report from the Retail Technology Show (RTS). Despite the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, sustainability remains a top priority for shoppers, with the report revealing that 76% of UK consumers believe retailers can do more to be sustainable. Moreover, 67% of consumers feel that making delivery carbon-neutral is crucial for green retailing. As a result, 50% of consumers support the idea of taxing online retailers to offset the carbon emissions caused by deliveries.

However, while consumers are demanding greener delivery options, their top priorities still revolve around speed and cost. The study by Asendia showed that 68% of shoppers prioritize fast delivery, followed by affordable delivery costs (53%) and free delivery (51%). In contrast, only 23% of consumers would be willing to pay more for 100% carbon-neutral deliveries, compared to 48% who would be willing to pay more for faster fulfillment.

Circular retail is also gaining traction among consumers, with 71% believing that offering repair services could help retailers become more sustainable. Many retailers are already exploring this trend. Additionally, 44% of UK shoppers are actively using recycling services provided by retailers, while 38% are actively choosing products with minimal packaging or recyclable materials. Another 34% are opting for refill packs to reduce packaging waste.

The demand for resale retail formats is also on the rise, with 35% of UK shoppers buying pre-loved or reconditioned items. A further 30% are choosing to buy secondhand in order to minimize their environmental impact. This shift towards sustainable consumption showcases consumers’ growing concern for the environmental consequences of their purchasing habits.

Matt Bradley, the Event Director for the Retail Technology Show, emphasizes that sustainability is now a core expectation for consumers when it comes to shopping. He believes that this trend will significantly impact various aspects of the retail business, including supply chains, returns processes, and the development of new retail formats, operations, and services.

Addressing sustainability concerns is no longer optional for retailers. As consumer expectations continue to rise, businesses must adapt and incorporate sustainable practices throughout their operations to meet these demands. From eco-friendly packaging to carbon-neutral delivery options, retailers have an opportunity to not only meet consumer expectations but also contribute to the global effort of building a more sustainable future.
