Clearpay’s Trend Report: Y2K, Barely-There, and 60s-70s Styles Dominate Fashion

Clearpay, a leading buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) platform, has recently released its latest Trend Report, uncovering the driving forces behind consumer preferences among its users. The report, which is published twice a year, reveals that fashion trends from the 1990s, noughties, and the 60s and 70s are currently dominating the fashion scene. Influenced by celebrities like Rihanna, these trends are reshaping the way people dress.

One of the standout trends highlighted by Clearpay is the shift from the “sexy silhouette” trend that emerged during the pandemic to a preference for clothing that is “barely there”. This transition has led to the incorporation of lingerie-inspired styles into everyday wear. Interestingly, Clearpay’s data shows that bodycon dresses are currently the most popular dress style, and this trend is even extended to traditionally revealing categories such as beachwear, where “lacy swimsuits” and “plunge” pieces are gaining popularity.

In addition to the Y2K styles, there is also a strong resurgence of retro fashion from the 60s and 70s, particularly in print and pattern choices as festival season returns. Floral prints, especially those featuring daisies, have seen a significant increase in sales over the past six months. Crochet tops, abstract printed dresses, and matching sets are also incorporating nods to the 60s and 70s. Furthermore, accessories play a crucial role in completing the retro look, with clogs, wide-leg denim, and glam rock-inspired pieces taking center stage, largely influenced by celebrities like Harry Styles.

Clearpay’s Trend Report also reveals that iconic accessories from the 1990s are making a comeback. The Fendi Baguette bag, in particular, has secured a spot in Clearpay’s top 10 accessories. Gen Z is embracing this trend by pairing the iconic bag with low-rise jeans and crop tops, drawing inspiration from the fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City”. Additionally, bold hardware and grungy chain necklaces are part of a pop-punk revival, adding edginess to any outfit.

The report also sheds light on the revival of occasionwear as consumers eagerly attend weddings, parties, and special events after a significant hiatus due to the pandemic. Midi dresses have experienced a surge in sales, witnessing a remarkable increase of 178%. Similarly, heeled shoes are now replacing the slipper trend that dominated in 2020, adding elegance and sophistication to various outfit choices.

Furthermore, it is important to note that runway trends from high-end fashion houses are gradually making their way into the mass market. The “old Hollywood” pink trend, popularized by Valentino, has gained significant traction. Fringed detailing, reminiscent of retro styles, is another popular choice, while cut-out designs and mini skirts capture the essence of both the 60s and 90s looks.

Clearpay’s Trend Report provides valuable insights into the fashion preferences of its users, indicating the popularity of Y2K, barely-there, and 60s-70s styles. With influential figures like Rihanna and Harry Styles leading the way, it is clear that nostalgia for past eras continues to influence contemporary fashion choices. As we navigate a post-pandemic fashion landscape, these trends will undoubtedly shape the way we dress and express ourselves.
