The latest English lockdown has cast a shadow over the upcoming festive period, leading many consumers to reevaluate and trim down their Christmas budgets by approximately 6%, as per recent findings. Interestingly, beauty products have emerged as a top choice for gift-givers this year, with 34% of shoppers leaning towards this category. Moreover, a notable 20% of individuals are expected to ramp up their online shopping activities during this holiday season. The insights unveiled by the Fashion Retail Academy’s research shed light on the evolving consumer preferences and behaviors amidst the prevailing uncertainty. While a considerable chunk of participants (26.8%) intend to purchase vouchers for gift-giving, there is a growing apprehension surrounding the potential risk of retailers facing insolvency, rendering these vouchers worthless. The average expenditure on gifts is forecasted to hover around £341 this year, indicating a 6% decline compared to the previous year.

Age is a significant factor influencing budgeting decisions, with young adults aged 18-24 anticipating to shell out £221 on gifts, representing a 6% decrease from last year. Conversely, individuals belonging to the age bracket of 45-54 are prepared to allocate £382 towards their gift-giving endeavors, marking a 10% dip from the previous year. Despite the financial strains engulfing many households, nearly two-thirds of shoppers have kickstarted their Christmas shopping, showcasing a proactive approach towards embracing the holiday season.

Lee Lucas, the principal of the Fashion Retail Academy, underscored the pivotal role that a robust Christmas season plays in the recovery journey of retailers reeling from the blows dealt during the initial lockdown earlier this year.
