Chinese Tourists Boost UK Fashion Industry Amid Brexit Uncertainty

The UK fashion industry is experiencing a significant boost thanks to Chinese tourists, especially as the number of EU visitors declines due to Brexit. Global Blue reports that the West End of London remains a top destination for international tourists, with Chinese visitors leading the pack.

While the UK saw a drop of 750,000 EU visitors last year, Chinese tourists still make up a substantial 32% share of all visitors. Their generous average spending habits make them a crucial demographic for the UK retail sector. In fact, Visit Britain has noted a 24% increase in Chinese flight bookings, indicating a promising trend for spending in 2019.

Luxury fashion brands are reaping the rewards of Chinese tourists, who are more inclined to splurge on high-end items like leather goods, bags, shoes, and accessories. With an average tax-free spend of £919, Chinese visitors rank just behind shoppers from Qatar and the UAE in terms of shopping expenditures.

Derrick Hardman from Global Blue stressed the significance of Chinese tourists for the UK, citing their penchant for luxury retailers, as well as their interest in the country’s rich culture and history. In central London, Chinese visitors are a major customer base, spending an average of £1,630 per shopping excursion.

Jace Tyrrell of New West End Company highlighted the considerable contribution of Chinese shoppers to non-EU tax-free spending, emphasizing that they are 59% more valuable than other international shoppers. Despite a slight decrease in overall spending by Chinese tourists in 2018, their average transaction value actually increased, underscoring their importance to the UK fashion industry.

As the uncertainty of Brexit looms large, the UK can depend on Chinese tourists to sustain spending and bolster the fashion sector. With their affinity for luxury brands and substantial average spending power, Chinese visitors are a pivotal demographic for the UK retail industry.
