Chinese Fashion Buyers Make Strong Comeback in European Wholesale Market

Chinese fashion buyers are making a strong comeback in the European wholesale market, signaling a positive recovery from the impact of the global pandemic. According to data from digital wholesale management ecosystem JOOR, there has been a significant increase in both the number of Chinese retailers placing wholesale orders and the transaction volumes for the FW23 selling season.

JOOR recorded a 33% year-on-year rise in China-based retailers placing orders from February to March 16. Moreover, wholesale transaction volumes from these retailers also saw a notable increase of 61% compared to last year. Interestingly, Chinese buyers have shown a preference for European brands, as there was a 58% surge in China-based retailers purchasing from European names. While other global regions also experienced growth, the increases were not as substantial, with retailers in China buying from North America-based brands rising by 12% and from APAC-based brands by 7%.

Chinese buyers are making a comeback at international fashion weeks, specifically in Milan and Paris. This resurgence not only indicates their confidence in the industry’s recovery but also presents an opportunity for European brands to strengthen their relationships with this thriving market. JOOR CEO Kristin Savilia commented on the trend, stating that the Chinese market is expected to drive growth in the luxury fashion industry this year.

The return of Chinese fashion buyers to the wholesale market and international fashion weeks signifies a positive sign for the industry, highlighting the Chinese market’s role as a crucial growth engine in the post-pandemic era. With Chinese retailers increasingly placing larger orders, particularly for European brands, it is evident that they have regained confidence in the industry’s future prospects.

This latest data from JOOR emphasizes the importance of international fashion weeks in attracting Chinese buyers. Milan and Paris have seen a notable influx of these buyers, further solidifying their confidence in the industry’s recovery.
