Chapal and The Rake: Reviving the Iconic USAAF Jacket

Chapal has partnered with The Rake to breathe new life into the iconic USAAF jacket that has been worn by generations of American aviators. The collaboration between Chapal and The Rake brings a contemporary touch to this historic creation. Known for its detachable golden shearling collar, wide reversed pockets, and glazed sheepskin leather, the USAAF jacket is a legendary piece. Crafted with precision-patinated leather in the workshops of Maison Chapal, located in the small town of Crocq in Creuse, this jacket is a true testament to French craftsmanship and expertise.

In line with the military theme, Breitling has also created a Korean military series centered around their popular Navitimer watch. Similarly, Chapal artisans have taken on a lighter version of the USAAF jacket, giving it a fitted and modern silhouette. While preserving the iconic features of the US Army Airforce equipment, such as the expandable gusset for ease of movement, Chapal brings a touch of French elegance to this timeless piece.

The USAAF jacket first made its appearance in the 1930s and was considered an innovative garment at the time. Designed specifically for narrow cockpits, it was one of the first military jackets to be made from cotton and nylon. The initial version, known as the A-2, was crafted from a variety of leathers, including horse, goat, and cow leather. It gained popularity through various paintings and was further immortalized by its inclusion in the film Top Gun, worn by actor Tom Cruise.

Drawing inspiration from these iconic military jackets, Chapal and The Rake have reimagined and adapted them into stylish civilian jackets. The collection features a quilted cotton gabardine lining, four exterior pockets, two interior pockets, and a removable golden shearling collar. These chic and sporty creations are available for a price of 2,600 euros, offering a chance to own a truly exceptional jacket.
