Chanel’s 31 Le Rouge: Blending Luxury and Sustainability

Chanel has once again proven itself as a trailblazer in the beauty industry with the launch of its latest lipstick line, 31 Le Rouge. This new product not only combines luxury and advanced technology but also promotes sustainability, an aspect often overlooked in the makeup sector.

After four years of intensive development, 31 Le Rouge is being marketed as a “lipstick for life”. What sets this lipstick apart is its refillable feature, allowing owners to simply purchase refills and pass on the heirloom-like item itself. This innovative approach not only minimizes waste but also adds sentimental value to the product.

The line boasts 12 elegant satin-finish shades that draw inspiration from Chanel’s illustrious heritage. For instance, Rouge 2.55 is reminiscent of the iconic 2.55 handbag’s lining color, Rouge Fétiche pays homage to the flannel ribbons that Gabrielle Chanel wore around her ankles as a good luck charm, and Rouge Beige reflects the natural beige tones that Chanel incorporated in her collections. These colors not only pay tribute to the brand’s history but also give them a modern twist.

Formulation-wise, 31 Le Rouge incorporates the camellia, Chanel’s house flower, along with nourishing ingredients like maracuja oil. The lipstick claims to provide immediately visible definition for up to eight hours and, with regular use over four weeks, lips will appear sculpted, firmer, smoother, and plumper.

The packaging of 31 Le Rouge exudes luxury and sophistication, mirroring the exquisite quality of the product itself. The glass lipstick case takes inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel’s mirrored staircase at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris, giving it a unique and elegant look. This distinctive case took four years to develop, transforming it from what initially seemed fragile into a sturdy, aesthetically pleasing container. Chanel collaborated with a master glassmaker from Japan to craft the glass, making this the first Chanel lipstick to boast glass packaging.

Furthermore, the packaging of 31 Le Rouge is entirely free of plastic, further enhancing its eco-friendly credentials. The absence of plastic not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances the overall luxurious experience for consumers. However, it is important to note that this luxury does come at a price. The lipstick retails for £140, with refills priced at £65 and kits available for £315.

Chanel’s 31 Le Rouge lipstick line underscores the brand’s commitment to blending luxury with sustainability. By introducing refillable options, incorporating sustainable materials, and creating a product that can be passed down through generations, Chanel is setting a new standard in the beauty industry. This innovative approach not only appeals to environmentally conscious consumers but also showcases the brand’s dedication to preserving its heritage while embracing the future of beauty.
