Chanel Presents Cruise 2019 Collection at Paramount Picture Studios

Chanel recently presented its newest cruise collection at the renowned Paramount Picture Studios in California. The collection, which drew inspiration from the spirit and optimism of the state, showcased a creative mix of active sportswear and beach-inspired looks. The runway was graced by the presence of award-winning actresses, adding a touch of glamour to the show.

The set design was a clever amalgamation of various American sports elements. At the center stage, a massive roller-skating rink court adorned with a giant double CC logo and two enormous Chanel symbols caught everyone’s attention. Electronic basketball scoreboards displayed an engaging match between Paris and Los Angeles. The opening looks featured models donning running shorts, sporty bras, and swimsuits, emphasizing a fit and athletic aesthetic. Voluminous Barbie-like hair, bobby socks, and platform sneakers completed the ensemble, while glittering metallic skirts, sequin cocktails, and classic bouclé jackets in sherbet hues added a touch of elegance. Pink emerged as the predominant color in the collection.

Throughout the show, creative visual puns were subtly incorporated, such as CC logo skateboards and the Number Five white crop top. The soundtrack featured snippets from iconic films, including “Nocturnal Animals” directed by former designer Tom Ford. The production, masterfully executed by producer Keith Baptista, projected images of downtown LA at sunset and nighttime on a giant screen. Black and white videos showcasing Chanel models amidst palm and magnolia tree-lined boulevards further enhanced the ambiance. Around 900 guests were seated on ergonomic bleacher seats, passing through protestors demanding fair treatment and residuals from the Writers Guild of America. Meanwhile, loyal G-Dragon and K-Pop fans expressed their enthusiastic support for the collection.

The spotlight was especially intense on Margot Robbie, who donned high-waisted Chanel denim flares, a golden gilet made of faux gold watches, medals, and coins, showcasing her flat stomach. Other notable attendees included Rose Byrne, Elle Fanning, Sofia Richie, and Kristen Stewart, all dressed in their unique Chanel ensembles. Following the show, Snoop Dogg thrilled the crowd with a DJ set, and Bruno Mars joined him for a few duets. The event had a racetrack theme, with a white racing fence backdrop reminiscent of the Santa Anita racetrack.

Virginie Viard, the creative director of Chanel, showed her appreciation for the models by displaying each one’s name on the LED screens, even sending birthday wishes to Vivienne Rohner. Viard drew inspiration for the collection from the films of Agnès Varda, a pioneering figure of the La Nouvelle Vague movement. Varda had filmed several influential movies in California during the 1970s and late 1980s, capturing the essence of the optimistic West Coast. The collection paid homage to her work, featuring prints inspired by Venice Beach murals and showcasing Sausalito chic and Melrose Avenue style.

Overall, the Chanel Cruise collection flawlessly fused the vibrant energy of California with Chanel’s timeless elegance. Viard successfully captured the essence of the state’s optimistic spirit, creating a collection that exudes modern movie star liberated chic. The show served as a testament to Chanel’s ability to constantly evolve while maintaining its iconic luxury brand status.
