Chanel Presents 2021-22 Métiers d’Art Collection at 19M Building

Chanel, the renowned French luxury fashion brand, is preparing to unveil its 2021-22 Métiers d’Art collection in a tribute to the talented craftsmen and women who bring their designs to life. In a departure from tradition, the annual show, scheduled for December 7, will not be held at Chanel’s usual venues but at the brand-new 19M building in Paris. This bold decision symbolizes Chanel’s commitment to the artisans and suppliers who collaborate with the fashion house to create their exquisite pieces.

The 19M building, situated near Porte d’Aubervilliers in the north of Paris, serves as a central hub for the specialist craftsmen and suppliers who work closely with Chanel, as well as other luxury brands. It is within this building that the latest ready-to-wear collection will be revealed, paying homage to the exceptional craftsmanship of the embroiderers, feather artisans, jewelers, shoemakers, fabric makers, milliners, and glove-makers who contribute to Chanel’s unparalleled beauty.

The significance of the 19M building, as explained by Chanel, lies in its name: “19” representing the Parisian district where it is located and also being one of Chanel’s symbolic numbers, while “M” stands for the French words “hands,” “fashion,” “crafts,” “labels,” and “factories.” This location serves as a connection between the historic fashion capital of Paris and a vibrant neighborhood within the city. It embodies not only the excellence of fine craftsmanship but also Chanel’s dedication to preserving and advancing the historic craft skills of the fashion industry.

Architect Rudy Ricciotti is the mastermind behind the design of the 19M building, which spans an impressive 25,500 square meters. The building now houses 11 specialist artisanal companies, including Lesage, Montex, Massaro, Lemarié, Maison Michel, and Goossens. These companies collectively employ 600 artisans who contribute their expertise to the creation of Chanel’s exceptional pieces. The Métiers d’Art show, set to take place on December 7 at the 19M building, is expected to captivate a global audience.

Chanel views its choice of the 19M building as a reaffirmation of its commitment to celebrate and preserve the remarkable artisanal heritage that is integral to the reputation of French fashion and luxury on a global scale. By showcasing the Métiers d’Art collection in this unique venue, Chanel not only presents its creative vision but also pays homage to the artisans whose skills transform its creations into timeless works of art.
