Chanel bids farewell to Karl Lagerfeld with Winter Wonderland Show

Chanel bid a bittersweet farewell to the legendary Karl Lagerfeld with a mesmerizing winter wonderland fashion show held at the iconic Grand Palais in Paris. The final show for the esteemed house of Chanel took place just two weeks after Lagerfeld’s passing in Paris, leaving the audience in tears with its emotional and poignant tribute to the iconic designer.

The Fall/Winter 2019 collection showcased Lagerfeld’s last sketches and set designs, transporting guests to a magnificent Alpine village complete with smoking chimneys and life-size cabins. The 2,000 attendees sat on wooden benches against a backdrop of the majestic Alps, marking the conclusion of Lagerfeld’s remarkable tenure at Chanel that began in 1983.

A focal point of the set was a painted cabin named Chalet Gardenia, a touching homage to Coco Chanel’s beloved floral emblem. Models gathered in front of the chalet as Lagerfeld’s friend and DJ, Michel Gaubert, called for a moment of silence. Lagerfeld’s voice echoed through the venue as he reflected on his decision to join Chanel, defying the naysayers who doubted its success.

Entitled Chanel in the Snow, the show featured models gliding down a faux snow-covered runway to the melodic sounds of sleigh bells. Standout pieces included oversized tweed coats, classic houndstooth prints, feather skirts, and shearling-lined hiking boots. The grand finale was a vision in white, showcasing pantsuits, pearl bracelets, and snowball skirts that exemplified Lagerfeld’s wit and meticulous attention to detail.

This emotional event signaled the end of Lagerfeld’s tradition of staging grand shows at the Grand Palais and marked the dawn of a new chapter with Virginie Viard, Lagerfeld’s trusted collaborator, stepping into the role of his successor. Viard will carry forward Lagerfeld’s unparalleled legacy, with collections now officially credited to both Lagerfeld and Viard. Viard’s heartfelt bow at the show alluded to the passion and dedication she will bring to her new position, with her debut collection slated for the Chanel cruise show in May at the Grand Palais.

Lagerfeld’s departure left a profound impact on the fashion world, as celebrities and models alike paid their respects to the icon who will forever be celebrated for his grace, innovation, and unmatched vision.
